Movie Columnist Gilbert P. Mansergh Consulting
“Sreenings” and “Cinema Toast”
Gil Mansergh’s innovative movie commentary “Screenings” has appeared as a regular column in weekly newspapers throughout Northern California since 1995. Gil lets you know what he candidly thinks about selected movies and video releases as well as classic films to rent. He sings the praises of under-rated sleepers and steers you away from films with fatal flaws.
How did this happen?
The opening of a new theater in Sebastopol prompted the Sonoma West Times and News editor to ask Gil to write a movie column “to encourage people to see movies they may not otherwise know about,” the only possible answer was: “When do you want me to start?”
Gil’s first paid movie review was for the Australian import, “Muriel’s Wedding,” the film which introduced American audiences to Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths. Several independent film makers have used Gil’s reviews in their ad campaigns (“Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill,” “What the Bleep,” and “The Hiding Place”). Based upon the requests for reprints, two of the most popular “Screenings” columns are: “Recipes for Terror” and “King Kong’s Rating.”

What about “Cinema Toast?”?
In the Fall of 2001, Gil teamed up with Doug Smith, morning host on KRSH-FM (95.9) to talk about new releases in theaters and on video/DVD. Their Thursday morning show, “Cinema Toast,” became so popular it quickly expanded from 4 minutes to the current 12 minute segment. (Listen to a classic broadcast here). Since Doug’s 2005 death in a motorcycle accident, Gil has hosted with four other DJs, and people as far away as London and Western Australia e-mail that they hear the show online at krsh.com.

In March of 2006, The Petaluma Argus Courier invited Gil to run his Cinema Toast mini-reviews in the weekly newspaper. This expanded to include a New York Times affiliated online blog managed by the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. The blog draws several thousand viewers a week and includes archival “Screenings” columns.
